CLIENT: CARLTON BOOKS, 1994-1996
As a senior designer for
the publisher Carlton Books, I was responsible for developing the
graphic style of their titles and, when the design was approved,
oversaw the two junior designers producing the complete book. In 1995,
I designed Moonlight Drive – The Stories Behind Every Doors Song.
The book examines in detail the nine-album career of the maverick
1960s band, led by the charismatic but volatile singer and poet, Jim
Morrison’s lyrics reveal a man who saw himself as a troubled prophet,
so I portrayed him as a religious figure on the cover, his head
enclosed in a halo. This stylised symbol was used throughout the book
in a variety of sizes - on the endpapers, in the chapters, sometimes
integrated with the song titles - to give Moonlight Drive
a simple but striking graphic unity.
As the book was produced without the co-operation of The Doors’
official archive, I also contributed to the extensive picture
research, sourcing images for ‘Roadhouse Blues’ (above right).
